DEI Events for Spring 2024

Event 1

On March 22nd  (10 to 11:30 am), Center for Gender in Global Context and Department of Sociology at Michigan State University is proud to host a virtual documentary screening (30 minutes) titled, “Until and Unless.”  The short documentary film explores the impact of Penal Code 377 on the lives of India’s LGBTKH community and the landmark Supreme Court decision to repeal the law on September 6, 2018.

There will be panel discussion following the screening, with co-stars and codirectors Sintu Bagui and Nitu Giri along with their event coordinator and translator Dr. Soma Roy.

Ashley StoneDr. Ashley Stone, DePaul University, Chicago. "Foremother of Social Theory: The Case for Including Ida B. Wells-Barnett in Sociological Canon."

Bio: Dr. Ashley Stone (she/her/hers) is the 2022-2023 Ida B. Wells-Barnett Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of African and Black Diaspora Studies at DePaul University. Dr. Stone’s research and teaching areas include race, gender, sociological theory, and higher education. Her current research project examines the reproduction of knowledge by exploring the factors that contribute to the inclusion and exclusion of the scholarship of classical Black women social theorists in graduate-level sociology curricula. Her scholarship has been published in anthologies and peer-reviewed journals, including the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity; Women, Gender, and Families of Color; Humanity and Society; and Sociological Inquiry.

In addition to her publications, Dr. Stone has been invited to speak on a variety of platforms about race, education, and non-violence. She has received numerous awards for her efforts in teaching, research, and social justice.
