MSU Sociology research group kicks off new lecture series on global environment, migration and health studies

September 25, 2024

MSU Sociology is pleased to present a new research group and an associated lecture series kicking off this fall.

The Global Environment, Migration, and Health Studies Initiative (GEMHS)  is dedicated to advancing scholarly understanding at the intersection of environment, migration, and health.

"Our research encompasses a wide array of thematic areas, categorized into four primary domains: the interplay between sexuality, migration, and health; the interrelations of gender, climate change, and environmental health issues; the impact of racialized and migrant experiences on perceptions of environmental challenges and climate change; and the convergence of public health, environmental justice, and academic scholarship," organizers wrote.

"GEMHS is committed to promoting academic excellence and innovation by offering comprehensive support to students and faculty through various activities, including workshops, seminars, research collaborations, and mentorship opportunities."

Organized by Drs. Maria Isabel Espinoza, PJ Pettis and Rebecca Karam, the research group will host a kick-off meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday October 3 in 457 Berkey Hall. It is open to all interested people.

The first lecture will feature MSU Sociology Associate Professor Dr. Stephanie Nawyn who will present her recent research "Mapping the Future of Migration and Climate Change."

The lecture series also includes presentations from researchers at the University of Michigan, the University of Utah, the University of London and the University of Vermont.
