Karam’s book is under contract with New York University Press and “examines contemporary Muslim American family life in the context of heightened anti-Muslim scrutiny and hostility in the United States.”

“While grounded in sociology, it is designed to reach audiences across multiple fields including racial and ethnic studies, religious studies, family studies and American studies,” Karam said.

In addition to shining a spotlight on Muslim American communities, it also has strong potential to generate visibility for Michigan State University and contribute to ongoing conversations about minoritized identities, family life, and intergenerational stresses in modern U.S. life, she said.

The book is expected to be published in summer 2027. The funds from the HARP Production Grant will enable Karam to ensure the final steps are completed in the edited and updating of her book.

“Support from a HARP Production award will directly enable the completion of these final production steps, facilitating the publication of a scholarly book that will contribute to the intellectual life and national reputation of MSU,” Karam said.

The HARP Production grants are funded through the generosity of the Michigan State University Research Foundation.
