Position Summary: The Department of Sociology at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks candidates for two fixed-term Assistant Professor positions for the 2021-2022 academic year.  These 9-month academic-year positions begin on August 16, 2021 and may be renewed for additional years upon positive performance evaluation and sufficient budgetary resources.  The successful candidates will teach the following undergraduate courses, respectively.


Position #1

Fall 2021: Dynamics of Population; Health & Society

Spring 2022: Sex, Gender, & Sexuality; Advanced Research Methods: Interview Methods in Qualitative Research; Social Issues & Change in Society (Senior Seminar)


Position # 2

Fall 2021: Political Sociology; Developing Societies; Advanced Research Methods: Survey Design, Implementation, and Use

Spring 2022: International Development & Change; Introduction to Environmental Sociology


Required Degree: Doctorate


Minimum Requirements: Successful candidates must have:

  • a PhD in Sociology or closely related field by the date of hire in August 2021; and
  • a demonstrated commitment to high-quality undergraduate education via scholarly teaching.


Desired Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have:

  • experience teaching writing-intensive, discussion-based courses; and/or
  • experience using innovative, experimental teaching techniques.

The teaching portfolio should document the candidate’s interest, creativity, and proficiency in pedagogy.  Candidates must include a 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy, explaining how you put your philosophy into practice (preferably using examples in courses you have taught), and how you plan to implement, improve, and expand on your ideas and techniques.  The teaching portfolio also must include each of the following materials from the last 1-2 courses taught:

  • course syllabus;
  • selected course exercises to promote student learning;
  • writing assignments or exams used to assess student learning; and
  • results of formal course/teaching evaluations.
