The Graduate Program

The graduate training program in sociology is designed for students who wish to obtain the Ph.D. in preparation for professional careers in research. Many students will secure funding in the form of a ½ time Graduate Assistantship as either a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant upon acceptance into our doctoral program or during their tenure in our program.  The Department of Sociology at Michigan State University offers competitive multi-year funding packages.  Please contact the Graduate Program Director for more information.

The department places a strong emphasis on research.  Michigan State University operates on a semester system from mid-August to mid-May each academic year.  The MSU Graduate School requires the Ph.D. be completed no later than eight years after entering the Ph.D. program.

The deadline to apply to our doctoral program is December 15th.
