BIOGRAPHY

Gerald Roman Nowak III is a PhD student who studies sociology. He is currently working under the direction of Dr. Laura Cabrera and Dr. Aaron McCright on an NIH BRAIN Initiative grant. The main goal of the project is to assess how certain stakeholder groups perceive of electroceutical interventions to refractory depression. In the past year as a research assistant with the project, Gerald has aided in the administration of survey questionnaires to nationally representative samples of four distinct stakeholder groups: (1) persons diagnosed with depressive disorders, (2) caregivers of depressed patients, (3) members of the general public, and (4) board-certified psychiatrists.  With data collection having been completed over the summer, Gerald is currently involved with quantitative analysis and the production of manuscripts. In order to optimize the training he’s receiving at Michigan State University, Gerald is pursuing a career as a mental health scholar and tenure-system faculty member. His primary areas of research are (1) how mental illness shapes life outcomes, and (2) mental illness stigmas. Outside of his professional pursuits, Gerald is a drive-in film aficionado, a proud puppy parent, and he also enjoys running 5K races.
