BIOGRAPHY

Kristina Beethem is a first year Ph.D. student in Sociology within the environmental concentration at Michigan State University.  Kristina received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a second major in Spanish in May 2019 from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, where she graduated summa cum laude.  During her time at NMU, she received the Harden scholarship and enjoyed being a tutorial assistant for sociology courses, participating in the Honors Program, and studying abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain.  Her research interests include environmental justice, migration, world-systems analysis, environmental attitudes and their effect on behavior, and social movements. She is particularly interested in using a macro-sociological approach to study environmental migration, its causes, and societal responses to it, especially between Latin America and the United States.  She hopes her research will foster understanding of environmental refugeeism and someday inform policy decisions of countries within the Global North.
