SOCIOLOGY IS...Many people in the US (and other countries) believe they have complete freedom of choice in their lives. After all, you chose to attend college, didn't you? Here's another option--spend the next few years of your life on the beaches of Florida. There's lots of sunshine in Florida, crowd of young people, and plenty of jobs that could support a life of playing in the sand and surf. Sounds like fun, so why didn't you go?
These are the kinds of questions sociologists ask, as sociology is the study of how society shapes us and how we shape society. From the development of the self to the functioning of large institutions like religion and higher education, from the experiences of immigrants in a new country to the development and dissemination of movies and music, sociologists seek ways to explain the complex and fascinating links between the individuals and groups, organizations, communities, and societies in which we live.
In addition, sociology offers numerous opportunities for entering fields such as human relations in business, law, education, and government. Given the breadth of topics sociologists study, a degree in sociology will equip you with the tools needed to successfully enter the business world--whether in Michigan, Florida, or an equally interesting place in another part of the world. Opportunities abound for MSU students to spend time studying other societies through Study Abroad programs.
The undergraduate program in sociology at Michigan State University is a constantly evolving and changing program and has undergone major revisions. The department's Undergraduate Education Committee has issued a set of principles that will guide the new program.
