This year the Center for Gender in Global Context awarded Sophia Koufopoulou, a member in the department of Sociology, the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award.
The MSU Center for Gender in Global Context awards three women with their “inspirational women award” on the categories of professional achievement, community engagement, and culture of empowerment. Koufopoulou received the Community Engagement award for “demonstrating a commitment to organizations at MSU and/or communities and organizations at MSU through service/volunteerism, leadership, and/or involvement”.
This past summer on Koufopoulou’s yearly study abroad program in Lesvos, Greece, she involved her students to help refugees from Turkey in the community. She linked the students’ studies in their sociology classes to their service learning with the refugees. Several of the students returned to Lesvos and to continue to reach out to the refugees. Koufopoulou has given multiple presentations regarding her research explaining the solidarity of Greek people towards refugees and the impact of the refugee crisis in Lesvos island.
Koufopoulou was also awarded the Sociology Department’s Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2016.
Congratulations to Sophia Koufopoulou on her awards and for providing real-world experiences through which her students both learn and volunteer.
