Dr. Daniel Menchik awarded 2018 Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor of the Year

Congratulations to Daniel Menchik, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, who was recently awarded the 2018 MSU Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor of the Year Award!

This award recognizes MSU faculty members who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to mentoring undergraduate researchers. The award is completely student-driven, as only undergraduate researchers can submit nominations and the University’s Undergraduate Research Ambassadors review and select the finalists.

“My ultimate teaching goal is twofold: (1) to present students with theoretical ideas that inform empirical research and contemporary issues, and (2) to instill students with a sense of how sociological thinking can inform everyday life and social problems,” says Daniel.  “In the classroom, I seek to ensure that students will participate and interact in every class, learning how to better ask and answer questions about our subject.” While Daniel serves in the Department of Sociology, his other appointment in the Lyman Briggs College, a rigorous academic unit devoted to bridging the sciences and humanities. By teaching sociological concepts in other departments, Daniel is pushing new groups of students how to think deeply about the social organization of healthcare institutions. “I want students to be motivated and able to keep learning about a subject long after we’re finished.  And so, during our collaboration, more than anything I want students to have fun, to laugh, to enjoy research, and to end the year wanting to learn more about the subject.”

“These awards are truly special because they are determined by our undergraduate researchers, based upon their personal experience with faculty members” Korine Wawrzynski, assistant dean of Academic Initiatives & director of Undergraduate Research, said. “It gives our students an opportunity to publicly thank their mentors for the assistance they have provided them.” Daniel Menchik will be distinguished at the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF) Awards Ceremony, from 3:30-4:45PM on April 18th in the MSU Union.
