Department of Sociology Teaching Assistantships (TAs)

Duties

Assist the instructor of a basic-level course. This can involve developing course materials, advising students, leading discussion sections, giving occasional lectures, and grading papers or exams. Normally half-time, requiring 20 hours of work a week.

Recipients

Several TAs are reserved for entering graduate students. These students are guaranteed renewal for a second year, provided they perform their assistantship duties satisfactorily and receive a grade point average of at least 3.6 in their first two semesters. After the second year, TAs are awarded on a competitive basis determined by academic and teaching performance.

Benefits

A Level I (beginning student without a Master's degree) half-time TA in 2005-06 receives a salary of $5,319 per semester, or $10,638 for the academic year. A Level II (advanced student) half-time TA in 2005-06 receives a salary of $5,859 per semester, or $11,718 for the academic year. All TAs receive a 9 credit tuition waiver and pay in-state tuition for any additional credits taken at the time of the appointment.

Department of Sociology Research Assistantships (RAs)

Duties

Assist in conducting a research project. The duties vary widely, depending on the nature of the research, but often involve literature searches, questionnaire construction, interviewing, data preparation, and data analysis. This may be quarter-time, half-time, or three-quarter time, requiring 10, 20 or 30 hours of work a week.

Sources

RAs are available through research projects conducted by individual faculty members.

Recipients

RAs must normally have completed basic research methods and data analysis courses.
