David Wiley (Professor) (Ph.D., Princeton) specializes in social inequality, social ecology of Africa and its environment (rural and urban), social movements, social stratification and religion, and internationalization of higher education. His major research projects include a) the militarization of Africa, b) community mobilization on enviroment and development in South Africa (focus Durban), c) socio-economic impacts of biological change on Lake Victoria (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), d) stratification and religion in the U.S. and Zambia, e) African urbanization and housing in Zambia and South Africa, and e) internationalization of U.S. higher education. He is former director of the MSU African Studies Center (1978-2008).
Wiley has been President of the African Studies Association and chairperson of international committees of the NSF, American Sociological Association, Council of Directors of Title VI National Resource Centers, and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been Vice-Chair of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO and the co-chair of the Association of Concerned Africa Scholars.
