
Xuefei Ren received her PhD degree in Sociology at the University of Chicago in 2007. She is assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Global Urban Studies Program at Michigan State University. Her research interests involve global political economy, politics of urban development, and sociology of space and built environment. Her current research projects include (a) transnational architectural production and global city formation in urban China, (b) state rescaling and mega-project developments in Shanghai and Mumbai, (c) network analysis of the cultural geography of the world city system, (d) global diaspora and cosmopolitanism, (e) urban growth and decline in Japan, and (f) international art market and urban gentrification. She employs ethnographic, statistical and spatial analysis techniques in her research.
Currently she is working on a book manuscript, titled "Building Globalization: Transnational Architectural Production in Urban China". The book examines the role of transnational architectural production in the making of global cities.
